What Did you Learn in Melbourne?
This is not a trick question! Answers from our Uptime hosts ranged from “Technical geeky stuff” (Rosemary) to “Every ISP is trying to break into Australia” (Allen) to “sponsors and speakers are already lining up for next year’s conference!” (Phil)

“The Wind Industry in Australia is hungry for knowledge”
That was Joel’s primary takeaway. “There was no shortage of questions - at every panel, every presentation, every roundtable. And it was never contentious,” he noted.
From sharing shadow monitoring information to methods for doing precision machining repairs uptower, the volume of information sharing and collaboration was noted by many presenters and attendees as the conference’s greatest value.
“Australia has a lot to teach the wind industry”
The noise session, in particular, was eye-opening for many, especially for those who work primarily in Europe or the United States.
This was no surprise to Rosemary, who put it plainly: “Operators in Australia have to deal with noise and neighbors.” Tilt and others on the noise panel offered thoughtful, proactive solutions in that session.
Matthew Stead, Co-Founder of the Australian company Ping and now Chief Product Officer at EOLOGIX-PING, WindLab’s Katrina Swalwell, and other industry experts shared details on dealing with noise and other ongoing operational issues.
One of those issues - underperforming assets - are a source of constant frustration, and a universal truth in the industry. But how operators manage and how successful they are in getting more performance and more production out of those assets varies greatly from country to country. While Australia’s energy subsidies create a very different landscape from what US owners deal with, Australia has developed a wealth of “homegrown” solutions. When replacement parts are literally half a world away, that’s simply a necessity.
