Wind Projects in Rough Waters
In Sweden, Vattenfall has decided to pause the development of the Kriegers Flak offshore wind project due to unfavorable investment conditions.
Off the coast of Bunbury in Western Australia, a new offshore wind zone has been reduced by half and pushed further offshore, primarily to address concerns from local communities.
On the east coast of the US, Orsted has announced plans to expand its presence in Rhode Island, saying it will open a new engineering, procurement, and construction hub and double its existing workforce in the state.
Meanwhile, in New Jersey, the Leading Light Wind project is facing challenges. There, Orsted has requested a pause from the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities through late December due to difficulties in securing a turbine blade manufacturer.
After Orsted’s decision to scrap two offshore wind farms in New Jersey last year, we wonder how much “financial infeasibility” the project can weather.
But there’s also positive news: the UK’s latest renewable auction has significantly boosted the offshore wind sector, with the country now surpassing 30 GW of combined offshore and onshore wind installations.
And there’s some very interesting technology on the horizon.
Mingyang V Turbine is Some Science Project
Allen and Joel look at the laundry list of new technology Mingyang’s new floating design, while Rosemary notes that the multi rotor concept can offer a slight aerodynamic advantage. Phil points out that “a ton” of floating projects are lined up for South Korea, so if the concept proves successful, we’ll see a lot more of it.
Wind Farm of the Week
NextEra’s High Banks Wind Project in Republic County, Kansas is our wind farm of the week. Joel details the $2.5B economic impact the project will have on the area, as documented by The University of Kansas’s Institute for Policy and Social Research.
