Wind projects - specifically, offshore projects - are making headlines in Europe. Ireland is taking a shine to offshore wind, estimating that it could add 69B Є to the country’s economy over the next 25 years. In the UK, a new (government-supported) company, Great British Energy, is seeking private funds as well to bolster its efforts to ramp up infrastructure development, including the Teesworks monopile manufacturing facility. And in the Netherlands, RWE and TotalEnergies have made their partnership official, announcing the OranjeWind offshore wind project, with integration of wind energy generation, green hydrogen production, and battery storage.
All of which provides an interesting backdrop for the funny thing that just happened in the Gulf of Mexico…
BOEM Cancels Offshore Wind Lease
In marked contrast to previous offshore wind leases, there was a lack of interest in the planned lease off the Texas coast. While economic influences and concern about a potential change in the administration surely contributed to the cancellation, it is surprising considering how well the gulf coast could support offshore wind. As Joel points out, the area has deep water access, shipbuilding facilities and expertise, and an experienced offshore workforce. Phil says the market just isn’t “right” for it now, but what else is at play? Will we see offshore developments in Texas (State) water before we see another BOEM lease in the Gulf? The full discussion is here.
Building Hurricane-Proof Turbines
Allen can’t say much about it, but a recent visit to Gulf Wind Technology stirred up a lot of new interest in an old subject: We need to figure out how to build turbines that can withstand hurricanes and other extreme weather, for developments in the Gulf and elsewhere. Downwind rotors, more flexible blades, what’s been tried, and what’s worth trying again? Rosemary brings blade-design and building experience to the discussion. Listen in and send us your thoughts!
Our Wind Farm of the Week is…
South Korea’s Olympic Powerhouse! Commissioned in 2017 to provide all the energy for the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, the Vestas-powered site has continued to power homes and industry in the Gangwan-Do region ever since. Interestingly, some of the other infrastructure put in place for the 2018 games will be used again during the Gangwon 2024 Winter Youth Olympic Games.
